Undrained Seismic Compression of Unsaturated Sand

چکیده
Unsaturated soils in engineered geostructures like embankments or retaining walls may experience seismic compression during earthquakes due to particle rearrangement associated with large-strain cyclic shearing. Although previous studies have investigated volume changes drained shearing of unsaturated soils, undrained presents a more complex situation. During shearing, total volume, matric suction, degree saturation, effective stress, shear modulus, and damping ratio occur that coupling effects affect compression. To better understand these effects, this study performed series simple tests on sand specimens. Contractile volumetric strain after 200 cycles was found vary nonlinearly saturation. The largest contraction occurred at saturation 0.4 coincided the decrease mean stress. specimens followed wetting-path scanning curve small suction. stress for all same linear relation accumulation strain.

Theoretical Undrained Shear Behaviour of Unsaturated Soils
Prediction method for undrained shear behaviour of unsaturated soils is discussed in this paper. Based on Original Cam Clay model, authors have proposed constitutive model for unsaturated soils that the effect of water content is incorporated into superloading surface concept. Firstly, stress path of constant volume shear test is formulated under constant void ratio condition. And relationship ...
متن کاملStudying the effect of inherent anisotropy on undrained behavior of sand-silt mixtures
In some situations, dams need to be built on non-rock alluvial grounds such as sand and sand-silt deposits. Therefore, undrained behavior and strength of silty sands are of great importance. One of the critical factors in studying the behavior of sand-silt mixtures is inherent anisotropy, a natural soil characteristic that depends on its texture and is independent of the soil's initial stress s...
متن کاملLiquefied Residual Strength of Undrained Sand upon A Parametric Approach to Hypo-elastic Model
A parametric study approach evaluating drained/undrained behavior of sand has been developed as a simple/quick hypo-elastic model capable of being used in engineering applications. The volumetric interaction of sand grains behavior against pore water pressure induces the tendency of soil mass volume change to contract/dilate due to variation of effective mean stress on solid grain, pore water p...
متن کاملTransport of citrate-coated silver nanoparticles in unsaturated sand.
Chemical factors and physical constraints lead to coupled effects during particle transport in unsaturated porous media. Studies on unsaturated transport as typical for soils are currently scarce. In unsaturated porous media, particle mobility is determined by the existence of an air-water interface in addition to a solid-water interface. To this end, we measured breakthrough curves and retenti...
متن کاملSeismic data compression using GULLOTS
Recent works have shown that GenLOT coding is a very effective technique for compressing seismic data. The role of a transform in a coder is to concentrate information and reduce statistical redundancy. When used with embedded zerotree coding, GenLOTs often provide superior performance to traditional block oriented algorithms or to wavelets. In this work we investigate the use of Generalized Un...
